Cara won’t text me back.

I’m home. The TV is on, but I’m not watching it. I’m texting her, but she won’t text me back. I just want to talk to her, but I haven’t heard anything from her since I left school. It seems weird and I’m trying to obsess over it.

I’m scrolling through my phone, waiting for a notification from her, when there’s a quick knock on my door and my father opens the door to the pool house.

“Come right in,” I say, rolling my eyes.

“You don’t look busy,” he says. “And you’re alone. And it’s my pool house.”

“What’s up?” I ask, not wanting to get into a pissing match with him.

He holds out an envelope. “Here.”

“What is it?”

“If you’ll open it, you’ll see.”

I sigh and get off the couch and take it from him. I walk back to the sofa, sit down, and look at the envelope. There’s nothing written on the outside.

“Just open it,” he says, pulling at the tie knotted at his neck.

I open the flap and pull out the contents. It’s an invitation on cardstock with embossed writing on it. I scan it quickly. “Why would I want this?”

“It’s an invitation,” he says. “To a charity dinner this weekend. I’d like you to attend.”

“Why?”

“Because they’re giving me an award,” he says. “I’d like you to be there.”

“So you’re telling me I have to go,” I say.

“It’s black tie,” he says. “There’ll be dinner. I have to give a speech. It would be nice to have you there. You can bring a date if you’d like. Invite the boys. Bring the whole gang.”

I drop the invitation on the table. “Okay.” I pause. “You bringing a date?”

He laughs. “No, I’ll be decidedly single.”

“Why is that?”

“Why is what?”

“Why are you decidedly single?” I ask.

He makes a face. “I’m focused on the business and raising my son. No time for a relationship.”

I start to make a crack about raising me, but decide against it. “Where is this thing?”

“It’s on the invitation if you’d read it,” he says, frowning. “Diamond Cove Resort. They’ve comped me several hotel rooms, as well, if you’re interested. It’ll be in their main ballroom. It’s a big deal. Even if you don’t think it is.”

For a moment, I feel guilty, like I’ve let him down. “I’m sorry. Congratulations.”

“Thank you,” he says. “Get it on your calendar so you don’t forget. And there will be lots of people there we know, so be on your best behavior.”

And just like that, the guilt is gone, because he’s talking to me like I’m in fifth grade. “Will do my best.”

“You can have a drink or two,” he says. “But let’s not embarrass ourselves, alright?”

“Your wish is my command.”

He looks around the pool house. “This place could stand a good cleaning.”

“I’ll get right on that.”

He eyes me. “You’re surlier than usual tonight. What gives?”

“Nothing. Just tired.”

He eyes me again, then nods. “Alright, fair enough. I’ll leave you alone. Let me know if you decide to bring a date.”

I watch him leave and close the door behind him.
